What to Expect at Your First Visit to Primary ENT
A little preparation makes a first ENT visit go faster and get you a more useful answer, so here's what to expect and what to bring.
1. Before You Arrive
Bring your insurance card, a list of current medications, and the name of your primary care provider if you have one. If your plan requires a referral, make sure it's on file before your visit — our insurance page covers how to check. Uploading your insurance card ahead of time lets us verify your benefits before you arrive rather than at the front desk.
2. What the Exam Involves
Most first visits start with a conversation about what brought you in and how long it's been going on, followed by an exam of the ear, nose and throat relevant to your concern. Depending on what we find, that might include a closer look with a scope or microscope, in-office testing, or simply a plan built around medication and a follow-up.
3. Common First-Visit Questions
How long will it take? Most first visits run 20 to 40 minutes depending on complexity. Do I need to fast or prepare in any special way? No, unless a specific test requires it, and we'll tell you in advance if so. Can I ask about more than one concern? Yes — mention everything relevant when you book so the visit is scheduled with enough time.
4. What Happens After
You'll leave with either a treatment plan, a next step like testing or a procedure, or both. If cost is a concern before you book, see our Good Faith Estimate page for how to request one ahead of time.
